This paper1 explores how younger and older cohorts of social science researchers view integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into qualitative research practices. Through interpreting group discussions, the study finds younger researchers display openness to redefining human-AI collaboration and granting agency to AI. In contrast, older researchers emphasize preserving human autonomy and expertise while cautiously approaching AI integration. Understanding researchers’ perspectives across cohorts is critical to incorporating AI while thoughtfully sustaining research’s human foundations. Ongoing reflection on how perspectives differ between cohorts will inform discussions on AI’s trajectory in social sciences.
